Angola Prison Rodeo

Angola Rodeo Background History:
The Angola Rodeo, the longest running prison rodeo in the nation, got its start in 1965.  The first arena was small, built by a handful of dedicated inmates and personnel.  It wasn't much in those days, and the rodeo was staged just for the entertainment of prisoners and employees.  In 1997, spectator capacity was expanded by 1000 seats and construction of a roof over the seating area began to provide increased comfort for spectators under Louisiana's blazing October sun.  Hobby craft space was also expanded to the point where it is no longer just a little concession area on the side for some inmate organizations to make a few bucks.  It is now an all-day full-blown arts and crafts festival, complete with entertainment and food galore.  The arts and crafts festival begins at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the rodeo which begins at 2 p.m. each Sunday in October.  Many fans come to the rodeo for the arts and crafts show alone.
Ticket, concession, and hobby craft sales for the next two years broke all records, prompting the administration to build another arena.  Construction began on the new stadium in April 2000 and increased capacity to 7,500.  The new stadium was completed for the first rodeo in 2000.
What began 40 years ago as a "fun" thing by a handful of rodeo-loving inmates and employees is now big business.  Proceeds from the Angola Prison Rodeo cover rodeo expenses and supplement the Louisiana State Penitentiary Inmate Welfare Fund which provides for inmate educational and recreational supplies.

A few of my girlfriends, SIL, and the kids went to the rodeo.
I have never been so this was a first for me. We left early that morning so we could get there in plenty of time to try all of the food and look at all the hobby craft areas.

We made it
Its a 20 mile road. There is only one way in and one way out

They had Fried Coke
I have never heard or tried fried coke so I knew I had to give it a try.
As a Dr. Pepper-aholic I do love coca cola products

Mauri found her a rocking chair just her sized she wanted to buy

We gathered in the arena ready to watch the rodeo.
It was packed in there and I do believe almost every seat was taken.

The kids found them a spot and they stayed there almost the whole time

Grand Entry
Angola Rough Riders enter the arena at full gallop and colors are presented.

Bust Out

All six chutes open simultaneously, releasing six angry bulls, with temporarily attached inmate cowboys.  The last man to remain on the bull wins the event.

Bareback Riding

Riders are expected to keep one hand in the air, and must stay on the horse for eight seconds to qualify.

Wild Horse Race

Six wild horses are simultaneously released into the arena with short ropes dragging behind them.  Three-man teams attempt to grab the ropes and hold the horse long enough for a team member to mount.  The first team to cross the finish line while still on top of the horse is the winner.

Barrel Racing

This is the only event in which inmates do not participate.  It is a tour stop for The Girl's Rodeo Association.  Contestants race their horse in a pattern between three carefully placed barrels.  The fastest time wins.

Bull-Dogging

The animal is placed in a chute, with two cowboys positioned just outside the chute.  Their job is to wrestle the animal to the ground as quickly as possible.  The team with the best time earns points toward the coveted "All-around Cowboy" award.

Buddy Pick-Up

This event requires one man on a horse (riding bareback) to navigate the length of the arena, pick up another inmate who is standing on a barrel, and race back to the finish line.

Wild Cow Milking

Teams of inmate cowboys chase the animals around the arena trying to extract a little milk.  The first team to bring milk to the judge wins the prize.

Bull Riding

This dangerous and wide open event is what the fans come to see.  Inexperienced inmates sit on top of a 2,000 pound Brahma bull.  To be eligible for the coveted "All-Around Cowboy" title, a contestant must successfully complete the ride (6 seconds).  The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rules govern this event.

Convict Poker

It's the ultimate poker game, and even winning has a price.  Four inmate cowboys sit at a table in the middle of the arena playing a friendly game of poker.  Suddenly, a wild bull is released with the sole purpose of unseating the poker players.  The last man remaining seated is the winner.

Guts & Glory

A chit (poker chip) is tied to the meanest, toughest Brahma bull available.  The object here is to get close enough to the bull in order to snatch the chit.  This is the last event of the day, and perhaps the most exciting.

We had the best time and made fun memories. I cant wait to go back again in October and hopefully Nick will be out of the field and can make it too.

Momma come unglued

Rhett has been talking about doing the calf riding at the rodeo and we tool him to let him enter. They have all the youth events at the beginning so we signed Rhett in and Nick and him went to the back to get ready while we went to the bleachers. The muttin bustin was first and then the calf riding was announced. I am thinking this little calf like we have at home so I get my camera ready and what I saw come out the shoot wasn't a calf at all it is a bull like one with horns and all. I am not thinking how can I get to my baby boy fast enough and omg Nick lied to me....I am going to kill him if I don't die right now. Holy moly I'm fixing to vomit.
Rhett is in the pink getting ready to ride his calf

This is what I see flying out of the shoot and its not a calf at all. Its a mini brahman and it has horns

2.7 seconds is what he rode and I thought I seemed like forever

As I am wanting on Nick and Rhett to come from the bucking shoots I'm getting madder and madder and then I see them all laughing and smiles and I could of killed them. Nick sees me and instantly starts saying "I didn't know I thought it was a calf, I told them Kelli is going to be upset I knew you weren't going to like it". So all in all they need to change calf riding into mini bucking bulls. I'm still in shock

National Anthem

At the Rodeo this weekend Maci got asked if they could use her horse Bentley to carry the flag and do the National Anthem. She quickly said it would be ok and he did so good considering he had never carried a flag before. He shined!

Maci had the poles first and did an amazing job. She has been really well coming back from her time off. She has been improving every time she runs and we are so proud of her.

Coming out the alley for the barrels is when my stomach gets into knots I get so nervous every time and don't know why...well actually I think I do...Speed.

                                                                    Turn and Burn

Bentley and Maci rolling, see why I get nervous.
Mauri filled us in at the Rodeo that she wanted to sell her pony and get her a big horse so she can Rodeo like Maci. Wow I thought we would wait until she got a little bit older but she has spoken.

Who will be watching tonite? How is it that every time I see her she is always amazingly beautiful? I just adore her.

Im Rich

Over the weekend Maci had a barrel run. I wasn't to much excited about it being that it started at 9am and it was an hour and half away from our house which puts us getting up at 6:30am on a Saturday. Also we would miss the Derby :( but being a rodeo mom what is a girl to do but do it. I knew it would be a long hot day and didn't want the young 2 kids to get restless and suffer so Rhett stayed with the farm working on the farm and Mauri stayed with Mother n Law and they worked out in the yard and garden. When we pulled up I saw that they had a Snow Cone stand so I knew then it was going to be a good day.
Maci had a great run but when she came out of the alley I saw the look on her face and she wasn't to happy. I told her she did really great and why was she disappointed. After she ran at 2:30 we decided that was enough for us and didn't stay until it was over. To her surprise later that day once it was over they figured times and gave us a call to inform her that she had placed 2nd in 4D and won a whopping 33 bucks. She was so excited because this was her first check she has ever won on barrels. All nite all we heard was I'm rich I'm rich when are they mailing my check because I'm rich. I so wish 33 dollahs was rich. We are so proud of her.

We will be on the road againt today in Crowvillefor a stock horse lesson and then next weekend in Eros for another Barrel Run.

Ive got jury duty so depending on how that goes this week may be a  slow blog week but hopefully they will get me out of there quick and not waste my time.

Weekend WhereAbout...

Since the weather has been PERFECT this week we decided to take full advantage! Friday our new Gator was ready so we headed to Papaw's store {John Deere store...Father n Law is the sales manager there and the kids refer to it as Papaw's store} to pick it up our new Gator. The Ryno wasnt big enough for all of us to fit so we needed something bigger. After picking it up we threw the ice chest in the back and the kids, farmer and myslef headed out.
First we had to do our daily CowCheck

Saturday we got up feed all the animals and rode off  to the breake to go shoot some snakes, turtles, and nutral rats. Maci is a one shot kill and she gets that from her Momma {Me of course} LoL
Daddy helped Mauri show us how its done
That afternoon we ate Crawfish for the Farmers Momma's birthday

Trot or Treat

The Woodlawn Riding Club had Trot or Treat playday Saturday and it was alot of fun!
Mauri had a birthday party so she went with my sweet In Laws
so Rhett and Maci went to the playday.

Keyhole Event: shaped like a keyhole in othe arena and you had to go down there and back without
getting out of the keyhole patter in white. She rode White Cloud for this one.

Panty Race: had to go around the barrel and get of your horse, grab a pair of panties out of the
bucket on top and put them on then get back on your horse and head home.
Bentley was way to tall for this so she rode White Cloud
Blue Panties looked like a Diaper on her, LOL this is funny!

Barrels

Potatoe Race: had to go to the box stick a potatoe and go home.
Some of the horse was so scared of the box

Rhett he was Woody

Maci was an 80's girl and Woody "Trot or Treating" the horse trailers.

Poles: you run down there and weave back and forth throughout the poles

Just HORSING around playing King of the Mountain. Mrs. Ky (lady in the hat is a trick rider and worked at Dollywood) so it ok. She is Maci's riding instructor....scary huh? LOL Naw she is really good and so glad we found her. The rest of the crew is her students.
This is a fun thing to do with kids. They will love it!
